Downloaded apps in mac appears with missing icons

When you run a certain program, it will appear in the Dock. Once you close the program, its icon will be automatically removed from the Dock.

Recently when I download an app from the App Store, an icon doesn't appear but there are settings for that app in the settings option, there is and open button next to the app on the AppStore but this doesn't work and I'm unable to open them!

I only noticed this as my iBooks app kept crashing and the Facebook icon turned white and wouldn't open, I took the advice online to uninstall and reinstall them how ever an I one doesn't appear and there is no way to use these apps.
